Conceptual Framework for the Longsword

Andrei Chirleșan (Instructor and Founding Member of IWHA) believes that any HEMA Weapon Discipline that is analyzed and then systematized for the purpose of being taught to others should include at least the following topics (below), both in the Conceptual Framework meant for that specific Weapon as well as in the Curriculum that is being taught during the training sessions.

Attention! For the same reasons that we use Modern English and Old German for the specialized terms in the IWHA Curriculum, the topics that make up the Longsword Framework are also in Modern English, both here, where they are listed briefly, as well as in the articles where they are described in detail at Andrei Chirlesan's personal site - The HEMA Dude, which you can find by pressing the buttons (titles) below.

What are the basic body movements required to fight with that weapon efficiently?

This includes the specific Grips for said weapon.

How is Distance conceptualized in this system, for the given weapon?

How is Timing conceptualized in this system, for the given weapon?

How is Threat conceptualized in this system, for the given weapon?

What are all the techniques you can use to defend with said weapon?

What are all the techniques you can use to attack with said weapon?

How do we understand and train "feeling" the sensory input we receive via said weapon?

(That which is is called "Fuhlen" in the Liechtenauer Longsword tradition).

What are the basic set of tactics or a simple INITIAL decision making-tree, that is meant to keep you safe by helping you hit and not be hit?

We mean tactics or a decision-tree that you can understand and have prepared for the said weapon in advance, at least for the beginning of the fight; IDEALLY for the beginning of each EXCHANGE.

Of course, these tactics are just a base, a starting point. From which you will have to react subconsciously, based on your training, to adapt to any unexpected development, during each exchange. But these basic tactics and decision tree should still be part of your training, to help you strive towards minimizing risk to you in any fight.
